Native to the island of Madagascar, in many tropical environments this palm is commonly kept outside for its easy ornamental value.
In the UK climate, it’s perfect for decorating any indoor space where it can get bright indirect light.
Dypsis lutescens goes by several common names, including Areca Palm, Golden Cane Palm and Butterfly Palm, the latter of which refers its iconic upwards curving leaves which resemble a butterfly.
Unlike Howea forsteriana, where several specimens are commonly planted together in one pot to achieve the full lush aesthetic, Dypsis lutescens’ many stems all grow from one specimen which forms clusters in the soil.

Light: This plant likes sun, but keep out of direct sunlight. Best placed in an area near a window.
Soil: Enjoys moist well drained soil with composted organics and some drainage material.
Temperature: Temperature range at which this plant is healthiest and grows best.
Growth Rate: Expect to see moderate growth during growing season.
Water requirement: Water when several cm of soil depth is dry to the touch. Water must draining easily away.
Humidity: Easy-going in regular home conditions, keep away from cold draughts and heat sources.
Maintenance: Easy to care for, just keep an eye on any extra environmental needs such as humidity.
